The Far Bank
At the gates of Olympus a thunderbolt and a voice tell Aeneas to go back. Athena tells him it is over; Ares beats him to the marble; Zeus, his own grandfather, declares the gods will be clean of Troy, and when Aeneas calls him a coward he strikes him dead without turning around. On the grey shore of the dead Hades is kind to him, shows him Creusa on the far bank and asks what he would give for a new chance with her. Aeneas signs in lead without reading, Poseidon rises behind him, and at dawn two figures walk into the camp.

The Road to Olympus
At first light Creusa is missing. Aeneas goes back into the ashes of Troy and finds only her body; her ghost cannot speak, only look at him. In grief he turns on the gods and climbs toward Olympus alone, through storm, falling rock and a river that rises against him, until, far above the clouds, he sees their city.

The Last Night of Troy
Troy is burning. Aeneas fights for a city its gods have already abandoned, reaches Priam's courtyard forty paces too late, carries his father out of the fire and leads a hundred and eleven survivors to the hill of Demeter, where at first light they watch the gods burn.
