At first light Creusa is missing. Aeneas goes back into the ashes of Troy and finds only her body; her ghost cannot speak, only look at him. In grief he turns on the gods and climbs toward Olympus alone, through storm, falling rock and a river that rises against him, until, far above the clouds, he sees their city.
1. Dawn on Demeter's hill. Aeneas counts the survivors twice: Creusa is not among them. He and Achates run back toward the smoke of Troy.2. Through the burned lower town, calling her name. At their own doorway he finds her in the ash: no wound, no blood, as if she had only lain down to rest.3. Her ghost stands up beside her body. She never says a word; everything is in her face. Three times he closes his arms on her, three times he holds only smoke.4. Aeneas turns on the gods and climbs alone. The mountain answers first: storm, falling stone, a river rising against him. Then the cloud opens, and he sees where they live.
