The being is the Guardian of the border. It has been asked for its name, never for who it is; it reads Grinvich's name as "the one born on the edge", but it does not know the word "mother" — only the gesture with which the same cloth was once laid on the same stone. Bound by that gesture, it lets him pass and goes no further. Beyond the line the moss hides a chasm: Grinvich chooses his hand over the bag, and the map, the last thing he had from his mother, falls into a darkness without a bottom. A faceless creature waits on the other side and is in front of him wherever he runs. And suddenly he understands that his mother never once spoke of the Source at dinner. Perhaps she was not searching for anything — perhaps she simply could not come home at once.

How it was made
1. The cast, drawn first
Before the first panel, every character got an anime reference sheet in the author's own project: the full figure and a portrait, built from the appearance the author wrote. The faceless beings got sheets too, so the Guardian stays tall and narrow and the Creature low and wide from panel to panel.
2. From chapter to pages
Each episode is one chapter of the book. The scenes stay exactly as the author wrote them: the captions and lines are the author's own sentences, shortened only to fit the panels, and every panel is drawn at the exact shape of its frame.
