Cold Ashes & Fiery Seas — Episode 4: A Handful of Grain
Aeneas walks out of the mist with Creusa, and the camp believes he found her alive in the burning city. Only old Anchises saw her lying still by the gate, and he tells himself his eye is failing. On Olympus Athena, who sent Aeneas home and watched him die, sees the dead walking and runs to Zeus; his answer is to watch them, in silence. The Trojans make a camp in a river valley, and winter finds them with nothing: the cold takes the first of them, and the rivers feed the rest with a generosity nobody asks about. A hill village offers its table instead of a fight, but one of Aeneas's own men wants all of it. That night a crow speaks with Hades's voice.
1. Dawn below Mount Ida. Aeneas and Creusa walk out of the pines, and Ascanius throws himself into his mother's arms: her hands are so cold. By the fire Anchises remembers what he saw by the gate of their house, and tells himself an old man's eye was wrong.2. On Olympus Athena cannot stop thinking about the prince she sent home. Through a gap in the clouds she sees him in the camp, alive, and Creusa at his side. She runs to Zeus. 'Watch them,' he says. 'In silence.'3. They walk until Troy is a smudge of smoke, then until it is nothing, and make a camp in a river valley: lean-tos, a scratched field. Every morning Aeneas takes a few men out to hunt and to see past the next ridge.4. Winter finds them with nothing. The cold takes an old man in his sleep and turns a little girl's finger blue; Creusa's breath makes no mist. The rivers fill their nets, in winter, in that cold. Aeneas does not ask why. He should have.5. Deep in the frost the hunters see smoke: a hill village. They take it at first light, the way the Greeks came to Troy. An old woman steps between the spears. 'Welcome, strangers. Come to our table. We would rather share than bleed.'6. Achates smells a trap: nobody feeds the men who just broke down their door. It is bread, broth and a fire. At parting Myrina gives them a small sack of grain, and Aeneas bows. Sergestus sneers: a handful, when they could take it all.7. Sergestus breaks into the store alone. Screams: old Tyreus lies on the frozen ground, and his granddaughter Lyka holds a small knife out at the looter with both shaking hands. 'We need it to live through the winter.' Aeneas grips his man's wrist: 'Put it down.'8. Aeneas kneels to the girl, and the knife goes down. They leave with the handful they were given. That night a black crow with pale eyes lands by his fire and speaks with Hades's voice: the cave where the river goes under the mountain. Come alone. Tonight.9. Two of them were waiting.

How it was made
1. New faces for a new valley
Sergestus, Myrina and Lyka got reference portraits before the first panel, so each keeps one face through the episode. The image filter refused Sergestus 13 times while he had long hair and a beard; cropped grey hair passed.
2. The author's beats, the AI's script
The first four pages were written live: the author typed the beats, pasted the standing art notes (faces, Aeneas's curly hair, room above the heads for balloons), and approved the script the Ghost Writer proposed.
3. Faces first
Every panel tells the artist what each face must show: brows, eyes, mouth. Anchises's doubt, Athena's shock, Myrina's calm, Lyka's terror. Panels that got a face wrong were redrawn.
4. Nine pages, balloons off the faces
The page composer now looks at each drawing and puts every balloon where the picture is emptiest, sky, wall or shadow, instead of on a fixed corner, so no line of dialogue covers a face.
