Cold Ashes & Fiery Seas — Episode 5: Salt and Lead
In the cave where the black river goes under the mountain, Hades wants to know why the village still stands: by the lead Aeneas signed, it was his to take. Aeneas could not kill the people who fed him. Their innocence, Hades answers, is not in the terms, but there is another way to pay. Who is not innocent? Aeneas names the kingdoms that left Troy to burn: Hatti, Egypt, Ugarit and Alashiya. With what army? Hades shows him the hungry peoples outside their walls, and Poseidon offers the bounty of every sea to whoever sails under him. On the snowy path home Athena blocks his way. She does not know what he signed, but she knows the dead do not walk home.

Hades greets Aeneas gently: the village on the hill still stands, and by the lead he signed it was his to take. Aeneas answers in three words: 'They fed us.'2. 'Then take them.' With what army, forty men and a winter camp? Hades passes his hand over the water and shows what lies outside the kings' walls: hill tribes, fishers, raiders on the rocks. No king ever gave them a crumb. 'Nobody feeds them. You will.'5. Poseidon wades out of the river. Troy's kings still owe him a wage, but Aeneas is not Troy's kings. Whoever sails under him gets every shoal, every fair wind, every sea and ocean, and every harbour will open. The rivers had fed the camp all winter; now Aeneas knows whose gift it was.6. Aeneas will go region by region, village by village, and gather warriors; every man who follows him gets the bounty of the sea. When they are strong enough he will turn the might of the seas on Hatti, Egypt, Ugarit and Alashiya and wipe them out of history. Hades scratches a new line into the lead. Poseidon: 'Agreed.'7. Outside nothing has moved: the snow, the pines, the moon. Far below burn two kinds of fire, the village's and the Trojans'. On the path between the pines Athena steps out and blocks his way, an owl above her. 'Aeneas. Don't do this.'8. 'Zeus cut us off. He said it with his thunder.' Athena pleads: those kingdoms are full of villages like the one that fed him. Then, quietly: she does not know what he signed down there, but she knows the dead do not walk home. Not him. Not Creusa.9. Aeneas does not flinch. As if her knowing changes nothing, he turns his back on her and walks down toward the village fires, while Athena watches him go. 'I did not turn around. I had learned that from my grandfather.'

How it was made
1. The same four faces
Aeneas, Hades, Poseidon and Athena are drawn from the same reference sheets as in Episode 3. Before lettering, every recurring face was checked against its sheet and the earlier episodes, and Poseidon's full-figure panels were redrawn to give him an old man's lean build.
2. Bronze Age, not medieval
Left alone, the image model reaches for castles, galleons and crowns. The visions in the black water name what the period actually had: the Lion Gate of Hattusa, a papyrus barge on the Nile, square-sailed ships and oxhide copper ingots in the harbour of Ugarit.
3. Faces first
Every panel tells the artist what each face must show: Hades's patience, Aeneas's anger and then his bitterness, Poseidon's cold turning generous, Athena's alarm and then her sorrow.
4. Nine pages, balloons in reading order
The page composer now places all the balloons of a panel together, so the question always comes before the answer. In close-ups it keeps them at the edges of the frame, away from the face.
